This was at Dazaifu, off to the side of the main temple area. I wonder what it is? Could someone versed in Japanese culture let me know?

I've been to Japan and I can tell you definitively that that is a space ship. It is waiting for its passengers to return when they are done with their mission.

What their mission is, is clearly circumspect at this point. Stay tuned, when tiny aliens make the news, at least we'll know where to head them off!

A space ship....yes....!!!! Seriously tho, this is actually a Buddhist monument. There are thirteen rings (same as you see on the top of pagodas) and they symbolize the stages of advancement toward Buddhahood. Then it blasts off.

Thanks, Someone-versed-in-Japanese-culture! I have a funny image of a big party, where a bunch of bald guys gather and count down together: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.... BUDDHA!!!!!!!
